November 23, 1981 Strategic Air Command sent eight B-52s of its Strategic Projection Force on the longest nonstop bombing mission in history to date. After a 31-hour, 15,000-mile flight, the B-52s from the 319th Bombardment Wing at Grand Forks AFB, N.D. and the 5th Bombardment Wing at Minot AFB, N.D., dropped bombs on a simulated runway in Egypt. The bombers relied on three air refuelings.
