The mission of the Experimentation Directorate (AFOTEC/EX) is to provide rapid, global, tailored operational assessments supporting the Air Force Capability Development Enterprise. Established in 2019, initially designated under the acronym "HEAT" for High-Speed Experimentation Assessment Team, the Experimentation Directorate works to provide independent, rigorous operational assessments to inform on emerging technologies, operational capabilities, requirements and data-driven fielding decisions. EX serves as the gateway to development of critical warfighting capabilities and larger scale operational test initiatives within AFOTEC and the Air Force
